Vector Tip To Tail Method

This post categorized under Vector and posted on June 23rd, 2018.

The easiest way to learn how vector addition works is to look at it graphically. There are two equivagraphict ways to add vectors graphically the tip-to-tail method and the parallelogram method. Both will get you to the same result but one or the other is more convenient depending on the cirgraphicstances. In essence you would be using the head-to-tail method of vector addition. The head-to-tail method involves drawing a vector to scale on a sheet of paper beginning at a designated starting position. Where the head of this first vector ends the tail of the second vector begins (thus head-to-tail method). This simulation-based tutorial walks the user through the tip-to-tail method of vector addition. Both text and voice narration accompany the graphica applet. This item is part of a larger collection of simulation based physics models sponsored by the MAP project (Modular Approach to Physics).

We explain Adding Vectors Using the Tail-to-Tip Method with graphic tutorials and quizzes using our Many Ways(TM) approach from multiple teachers. This lesson demonstrates how to add vectors using the tail-to-tip method. This item contains a set of animated slides that demonstrate how to add three vectors using the tip-to-tail method. It is a companion resource to an interactive simulation that takes the user through each step of the same process. SEE RELATED ITEMS BELOW for a link to the companion simulation. To sum vectors using this method simply move them such that the head of one vector is attached to the tail of the other. Once all the vectors have been chained together the resultant vector is easy to discern -- it is simply a vector that points from the start of the chain to the end.
